A few weeks ago I entered the NoGD (Notes on Game Development) competition for Aspiring Women Game Artists. I certainly didn’t expect this.
After the initial euphoria wore off…okay, it hasn’t yet…what was I talking about? 
In all seriousness, I can’t believe the opportunity they’ve given me. I haven’t taken a formal art class since I was eight years old. Now I’ll be getting instruction from professionals with a specific focus on game art. I’m not sure what all this means, but the universe has been sending me a lot of signs lately.
They printed this section of my essay that sums up my goals pretty well:
“I want to challenge the notion of ‘games for women.’ Thus far, attempts to court women gamers have focused on games with domestic, consumerist, and cutesy themes: the gaming equivalent of cotton candy. I feel that this is far too narrow a scope. My goal is to create games that are smart, funny, and memorable, and enjoyable to anyone who likes a challenge.”
Is there a good way to ask your mom if you might be part leprecaun? I think the evidence speaks for itself:

I found six of those little things yesterday when I was supposed to be studying for the GRE. Does this mean I can stop studying now? Hmm…maybe if this grad school thing doesn’t work out I can go into game design for real. Watch out, Dave Gilbert!
