Go Team Venture! - November 2nd, 2007
Holy fructose, Batman! Check out this sweet interview.
Vel of our very own AGS community has compiled an interview with Wadjet Eye Games. You can find out all sorts of fun behind-the-scenes stuff about Blackwell: Unbound, plus some background stuff about the team. I like how my Myst and Riven posters are barely visible in the background of my picture.
Hope everyone had an excellent Halloween. I went as my favourite Batman villain, Mr. Freeze.
…kidding. I finally got to dress up as Poison Ivy.
Yes, I actually bought the dress that my avatar is wearing. Lame!
Blackwell: Unbound Released! - September 5th, 2007
I’m going to have the best “What I Did on my Summer Vacation” essay in the whole class. I’m happy to report that after a short delay, Blackwell: Unbound has been released. Put down your glass of port and dust off your reading glasses, because this game just took over your evening.
Tension arises in the medium-guide relationship
Rated PG-13 for rampant smoking and scandalous dialog.
I finished the last of the graphics on Sunday, and celebrated my creative freedom with a little cartooning. Tomorrow I will upload what I can only describe as an orgy of comics. Some of them are also scandalous. Stop reading my blog, mom!
Ten sprites 'till the break! - August 27th, 2007
I bought a pair of sunglasses this morning. They’ve got a brownish tint, which gives me the eerie feeling that I’m walking around in a flashback. It was kind of fun at first, but then I thought, isn’t every moment a flashback as soon as you stop living in it? And I realized my new glasses make me feel like I’m just watching my day on playback. Or, as my housemate puts it, “Like walking around in an acid trip.” Either way, it was an itty bitty mindfuck and I hadn’t even had breakfast yet.
Existential crises aside, I should be able to finish all the art for “Unbound” today. Time to crank up the MIKA and use this coffee buzz to the fullest.
Blackwell: Ultimatum - August 15th, 2007
You might just have to buy Blackwell: Unbound. Yesterday Dave and I spent a good half an hour recording audio commentary for the game, a little bonus you get once you win. We chat a bit about the artistic process, but you also get to hear me speculate about what Joey is and isn’t allowed to watch. Plus, at one point Dave accidentally calls himself old. Worth the ten dolla just for that.
As I continue to overbook myself creatively, you should be seeing some more random-ass comics over there on the comics page. I had the cowboy idea a couple days ago and it wouldn’t leave me alone until I made it into a comic. Thank god for flickr.
Should be a new “political” cartoon up there relatively soon as well. I’m pleased/disturbed by how easy it was to get my stuff into another newspaper. Side note: when I sent in my comic about David Suzuki (a Canadian environmentalist) and energy efficient lightbulbs, the editor of the paper wrote me back and said, “Hey, this will go great with David Suzuki’s article about energy efficient lightbulbs!” I was so on that day.
Oh, before I forget, a big thank you to everyone who’s linked to my blog. Wordpress lets me see all incoming links, and I’m finding out about all sorts of neat game blogs, plus some awesome artsy ones that have mentioned me. Aw shucks y’all, making me feel special. As soon as I think of a way to pretty up my links page I’ll certainly return the favour.
That’s all for now! Tune in next week for whatever updates I have to offer. Now, for my next impressive feat, I’m going to collapse into a post-ultimate-frisbee coma like this Zzzzz…
Another new game?! - June 3rd, 2007
I’ve been doing a bit of travelling lately, which handily explains both the lack of updates and the delayed announcement of yet another adventure game!
Remember that graphic design commission I mentioned a while back? It came from the one and only Dave Gilbert, the independent game developing powerhouse who gave us The Shivah and The Blackwell Legacy. Much to my surprise, he contacted me to do the graphics for the next installment in the Blackwell series: Blackwell Unbound. My inner eight-year-old hasn’t been so happy since I stole that ice cream cone from a clown.
There’s a synopsis of the game over at Dave’s site, but if you want to hear it from me, here goes:
You play as spirit guide Lauren Blackwell and her ethereal lifemate Joey. Together they travel the streets of New York helping lost souls reach ‘the other side.’ Sometimes, this requires a bit of field work:
Or some tricky “puzzle-solving” logic:
In all seriousness, I’m absolutely thrilled to be involved with a commercial game, and Dave is awesome to work for. “Unbound” is due to be released in mid-August, probably around the same time we’ll be seeing Nanobots. Next week I’m fleeing the country for about two months (fine, “vacationing”) so I might not be updating much. That doesn’t mean I don’t love you, internet, it just means we should see other people for a while. Possibly…people in Europe.
